Quantification of uncertainty for fluid flow in heterogeneous petroleum reservoirs

چکیده
Detailed description of the heterogeneity of oil/gas reservoirs is needed to make performance predictions of oil/gas recovery. However, only limited measurements at a few locations are usually available. This combination of significant spatial heterogeneity with incomplete information about it leads to uncertainty about the values of reservoir properties and thus, to uncertainty in estimates of production potential. The theory of stochastic processes provides a natural method for evaluating these uncertainties. In this study, we present a stochastic analysis of transient, single phase flow in heterogeneous reservoirs. We derive general equations governing the statistical moments of flow quantities by perturbation expansions. These moments can be used to construct confidence intervals for the flow quantities (e.g., pressure and flow rate). The moment equations are deterministic and can be solved numerically with existing solvers. The proposed moment equation approach has certain advantages over the commonly used Monte Carlo approach. ©1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Accurate, Efficient Quantification of Uncertainty for Flow in Heterogeneous Reservoirs Using the KLME Approach
Accurate modeling of flow in oil/gas reservoirs requires a detailed description of reservoir properties such as permeability and porosity. However, such reservoirs are inherently heterogeneous and exhibit a high degree of spatial variability in medium properties. Significant spatial heterogeneity and a limited number of measurements lead to uncertainty in characterization of reservoir propertie...
متن کاملA new 2D block ordering system for wavelet-based multi-resolution up-scaling
A complete and accurate analysis of the complex spatial structure of heterogeneous hydrocarbon reservoirs requires detailed geological models, i.e. fine resolution models. Due to the high computational cost of simulating such models, single resolution up-scaling techniques are commonly used to reduce the volume of the simulated models at the expense of losing the precision. Several multi-scale ...
متن کاملTransitional Waves in Three-Phase Flows in Heterogeneous Petroleum Reservoirs
Natural reservoirs are porous and permeable rocks containing deposits of hydrocarbons (oil reservoirs) or pure water (aquifers). Porosity and permeability are the most important physical properties of reservoirs that affect flow and transport. In general these geological parameters are stochastically modeled (see [?, ?] and references therein). As a consequence the equations governing flow and ...
متن کاملA Novel Combinatorial Approach to Discrete Fracture Network Modeling in Heterogeneous Media
Fractured reservoirs contain about 85 and 90 percent of oil and gas resources respectively in Iran. A comprehensive study and investigation of fractures as the main factor affecting fluid flow or perhaps barrier seems necessary for reservoir development studies. High degrees of heterogeneity and sparseness of data have incapacitated conventional deterministic methods in fracture network modelin...
متن کاملModeling Critical Flow through Choke for a Gas-condensate Reservoir Based on Drill Stem Test Data
Gas-condensate reservoirs contain hydrocarbon fluids with characteristics between oil and gas reservoirs and a high gas-liquid ratio. Due to the large gas-liquid ratio, wellhead choke calculations using the empirical equations such as Gilbert may contain considerable error. In this study, using drill stem test (DST) data of a gas-condensate reservoir, coefficients of Gilbert equation was modifi...
